Combatting stereotypes and discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity - Podcast available

Description:

The UN and Council of Europe standards and mechanisms seek to promote and ensure respect for the human rights of every individual, including those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT). Lesbian, bisexual and transgender women often face multiple layers of discrimination; they are not only discriminated because they are women – but also because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.

The aim of this Side Event is to explore the experiences of lesbian, bisexual and transgender women and to exchange ideas and examples of promising practices in tackling gender stereotypes and discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity. Building on international human rights standards enshrined in human rights treaties and elaborated by UN treaty bodies, as well as the Council of Europe Recommendation (2010)5 on measures to combat discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity and the Parliamentary Assembly’s resolution 2048/2015 on the discrimination of transgender people, the workshop will pool national perspectives and experience and international standards with a view to identifying effective policies and practices.
