The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission issued the following comments today (7-30) following the first day of the Constitutional Court hearing in Uganda on the Anti-Homosexuality Law, which will resume on Thursday:
IGLHRC Executive Director Jessica Stern said: “The Ugandan court’s re-examination of this law should expose what is painfully obvious to the world: that the law’s intent and letter is discriminatory, hateful and dangerous. Our hope is that the court will come to this conclusion and overturn a law that already has sparked violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity, is driving LGBT individuals underground and is certain to elevate unconscionable levels of bias against this community, if it remains in effect. No country should hardwire discrimination into law-- doing so runs counter to international human rights treaties, including those to which Uganda is a signatory.”
