...The event capped off an inaugural year that has seen the group raise over $10,000. Director of development and external relations for IGLHRC Maria Sjodin says those funds will go to support groups and other organizations in countries like Russia and Gambia—the latter of which just sharpened laws that imprison gays for life—to fight for their rights....
..."I think [organizations like this] are really important," said Eric Sawyer, co-founder of Act Up and longtime IGLHRC supporter. "Because with young professionals who live in a city like New York, where being LGBT is largely accepted and where you have the privilege and you are able to have a life free of human rights violations, it gives you a responsibility try to lift the realities for people, less privileged than yourself."
