Struggling to Survive Iraqi LGBT People’s Accounts of Violence and Rights Abuse

Struggling to Survive, Iraqi LGBT People’s Accounts of Violence and Rights Abuse

Since the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, LGBTIQ people have been targets of frequent violent, and sometimes deadly attacks by Islamic militias, vigilantes, and members of their own families or tribes. This publication presents a collection of stories told by survivors of such violence in Iraq. The individuals in this booklet have decided to come out from the shadows and share their stories.

This project by the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC - now OutRight Action International) strives to shed light on the realities of Iraq’s LGBT community members. This memoir not only exposes the daily struggles of the authors, but also importantly offers us a glimpse into their dreams, aspirations, and hopes for a better and brighter future.
