Celebration of Courage 2016

We hope you will join us for this year's Celebration of Courage for the first time at the United Nations inside the exclusive Delegates Dining Room where we will honor the work of Indonesia’s LGBT organization, Arus Pelangi, as well as invite special guest India's Crown Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil. Enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvers in support of human rights for LGBTIQ people everywhere. Special Guest: Indian Crown Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, The Lakshya Trust, an HIV and LGBTIQ rights charity (featured recently in th Huffington Post).

In partnership with UN Women: 2-day regional consultation in Bankok

In partnership with OutRight Action International, today starts the two-day regional consultation with UN Women on promoting and protecting the rights of lesbians, bisexual women, transgender and intersex people. The Regional Consultation recognizes and builds on previous work in advancing the rights and the well-being of LGBTIQ people, reducing inequality based on sexual orientation and gender identity and supporting inclusive development in the region including UNDP, Being LGBTIQ in Asia Initiative, UN Free and Equal Campaign for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equality, etc.

Members Day at the United Nations

Kevin Schumacher, Regional Program Coordinator for MENA, was invited by the UN Association of USA to talk at their annual gathering on refugee issues. Other members of the panel included a representative from Doctors Without Borders and a Syrian young woman whose father is abducted by the Assad government and her family is refugee in Turkey, waiting for resettlement in the USA. The discussion went very well and it was well received by the audience. Here are pictures from the session.

Measuring inclusion of LBTI women - Podcast available

In the context of recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals no one is to be left behind when accessing socio-economic and cultural rights. Access to housing, education, employment, services, health care are important factors to ensure active participation in society, its development and leading a life in dignity. LBTI women are one of the most vulnerable groups and at risk of being discriminated and excluded. In the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal measuring progress is going to be crucial.

Bringing Abortion Back to the Advocacy Table - Erasure and Silencing in the Sustainable Development Goals

Under the Sustainable Development Goals, governments have pledged to continue the unfinished business of the Millennium Development Goals. In the new ambitious agenda, governments have committed to reduce maternal mortality, achieve universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights, and achieve gender equality as a matter of women’s and girls’ human rights. But some rights remain contentious - access to safe and legal abortion. Access to safe and legal abortion services is crucial to achieving reproductive health and rights but where is this right in the SDGs?
