When Myanmar opened its doors to the world, it also opened a window on the activism of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities in the country.

November 14-16, Colors Rainbow, Abadi Art, Theik Khar Myanmar and various artists and activists will present the first “&PROUD” Yangon LGBT Film Festival, featuring 33 long and short films and documentaries from around the Asia region, including seven films produced in Myanmar. The films will showcase issues and challenges faced by LGBT people in Southeast Asia and other Asian countries.

Long time human rights activist, Aung Myo Min from Equality Myanmar will open the festival with Canadian ambassador, Mark McDowell. "This festival is regarded as a Pride for LGBT people of Burma because it is the first time for this kind of event,” said Myo Min. “LGBT people in Burma are always marginalized and shown as abnormal in local movies. However, the selected films show the other side of their life, courage and contribution. I hope this film festival could contribute to changing the negative mindset of people who see LGBT people as the problem of the society, I want to tell them LGBT people are not problem making persons, but people who are making good contribution to our society.”

Three of the films “Open”, “Shwe” and “That’s The Way I Am” were produced by ten LGBT youth from Myanmar. All films will be screened at the French Institute.

An art exhibit that began on November 8, titled, “I am Proud: An Exhibition of Contemporary Identities” leads up to the film festival. The art exhibit explores the pride and diversity of the LGBT people in Myanmar and questions traditional roles of men and women in Burmese society.
