IGLHRC Statement on the International Day of Action for Trans Depathologization 2013

“Stop Pathologizing Gender Diversity in Childhood”

October 19, 2013 (New York)—The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) stands in solidarity with actions taking place in many countries on the seventh annual International Day of Action for Trans Depathologization. IGLHRC joins this year’s call to “Stop Pathologizing Gender Diversity in Childhood.” We re-affirm that pathologization of gender identity violates the human right to health and has severe consequences on other rights, including the rights to housing, employment and education. Worldwide, trans and gender non-conforming people are disproportionately represented among the homeless, the unemployed, and those who leave or are forced out of education early.

IGLHRC works with individuals and organizations in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Middle East to document human rights violations against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals and use the documentation for advocacy. Recent reports from partners in Colombia, Chile, Guatemala, Guyana, Philippines, Turkey, Zimbabwe and others demonstrate the ways in which the rights of trans people, as well as the rights of people who are lesbian, gay, and bisexual, are violated.

The Day of Action is organized annually by the International Campaign to Stop Trans Pathologization (STP) to fight for trans health rights. STP campaigns for the removal of “Gender Dysphoria” and “Gender Identity Disorders” from the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases (ICD).
