NewFest, the New York LGBT Film Festival, which runs October 22-27, is bigger, better, and more diverse than ever. The festival opens with the New York premiere of “Eisenstein in Guanajuato," which is a documentary about famous gay Russian director, Elmer Bäck, in 1931 Mexico. The closing event of the festival is the US premier of the Swedish drama “Girls Lost," about a trio of outcast teen females who mysteriously transform into boys overnight.

Other films include writer/ director Stephen Cone’s “Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party ;” “The Summer of Sangaile”, a Lithuanian teen lesbian romance depicting the coming of age of a young girl; “Everlasting Love,” a Spanish thriller; Catherine Stewart’s “While You Weren’t Looking,” about the relationship of a married South African lesbian couple; Cheryl Dunye’s “Black Is Blue”; "The Girl King," based on the life of Sweden’s lesbian Queen Christina, etc.

These features highlight the gradual mainstreaming of LGBTIQ issues and relationships around the world. The film festival is an interesting opportunity for LGBTIQ individuals living in NYC to get a broader perspective on LGBTIQ discourse in a global context.
