OutRight Events at CSW62
Advocating for the rights of women everywhere is inclusive within OutRight’s overall mission to further human rights and opportunities for LGBTIQ people. The month of March, however, allows the aims of OutRight and many others to pay special focus on the empowerment of all women. This comes with the celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8th and the 62nd session on the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) March 12-23.
Held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, this international conference is two weeks of negotiations and meetings dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. Each year the event is accompanied by a specific theme, with 2018 being ‘Empowering Rural Women and Girls’.
What is it?
CSW, acting as a functional commission of the UN Economic and Social Council, was established in 1946. Since 1996, it has been dedicated to upholding and implementing the 1995 Beijing Platform for Action, a platform upholding the human rights of women. CSW is also a contributor to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Why is it important?
With these annual meetings, CSW is able to assess the progress made each year on these international platforms by evaluating current gaps and emerging issues.
