Program
Outright’s Celebration of Courage audience attracts LGBTIQ individuals and allies who care about rights and equality. Celebration of Courage welcomes some of the best and the brightest from the civil society, media, politics, business, and finance sectors. These stakeholders are Outright’s top-level supporters and who are among the world’s and New York City’s most influential philanthropists, industry, and civic leaders. Many guests have international connections and are deeply attuned to world affairs.
Guests of Outright’s Celebration of Courage will join a Welcome Reception on a glass-enclosed terrace with an outdoor veranda access overlooking the Hudson River and enjoy a panoramic view of the Garden State, enjoying a picturesque summer sunset. During the Welcome Reception, guests will be able to network and bid online via mobile device on items featured in the event’s Silent Auction.
Transitioning into the Dinner & Program sections of the evening, guests exit the outdoor veranda and enter the dining room. Outright Board Directors and staff will welcome guests to dinner. Following dinner, Outright will present the recipients of The Felipa de Souza Award, The Outstanding Award and The Outspoken Award. In the spirit of giving, during this time, guests will also be invited to participate in a Live Auction and Paddle Raise to raise critical support for Outright’s lifesaving work. Following dinner and the awards, guests will be invited to attend a Closing Reception.

2023 Honorees
Felipa de Souza Award: Eastern Caribbean Alliance for Diversity and Equality (ECADE)
ECADE is a recognized leader in the Caribbean drawing attention of policymakers, opinion leaders, social movements, the public and the media to the violence and discrimination experienced by LGBTIQ people. In a region where the LGBTIQ community has seen their rights stripped, unjust persecution, faced oppression, fear and judgement, ECADE has been a beacon of hope and action striving towards the communities’ humanity, dignity, and liberty. ECADE’s recent work advancing the decriminalization of same sex relationships, awareness of gender-based violence against women, girls, and gender nonconforming people, and confronting the unequal treatment under the law of the LGBTIQ community, is remarkable and has contributed significantly toward the safety, autonomy, and peaceful existence of LGBTIQ people in the Caribbean.
Outspoken Award: Queer Cast of the Paramount+ Original Series Star Trek: Discovery
Outright is proud to individually honor Wilson Cruz, Anthony Rapp, Blu del Barrio, Mary Wiseman, and Tig Notaro – who make up the queer cast of StarTrek: Discovery and who play queer roles on television, out and proud – for their commitment to LBGTIQ rights around the world through all they do in their life and work. Outright is also proud to honor out Executive Producer Michelle Paradise for their exemplary work on StarTrek: Discovery. The Star Trek franchise’s core values align closely with Outright’s own: education, care, compassion, diversity, equity, inclusion, advocacy, and authentic LGBTIQ representation and storytelling. Members of the queer cast of Star Trek: Discovery are global LGBTIQ icons – courageous and elevating the visibility, voice, and platform of millions of queer people around the world that battle discrimination and risk to their personal safety, every day.
Outstanding Award: Google.org
Google.org, Google’s philanthropy, brings the best of Google to help solve some of humanity’s biggest challenges combining funding, product donations and technical expertise to support underserved communities and provide opportunity for everyone. Google.org has demonstrated an extraordinary philanthropic commitment to Outright and the global movement to advance human rights for LGBTIQ people. From its inspirational support of Outright’s COVID and Ukraine Funds, research reports, and digital campaigns – to its use of talent, events, platforms, and brand to amplify Outright’s work and the issues impacting our communities – Google.org has exhibited an incredible effort to ensure that LGBTIQ people globally are centered and uplifted.
Event Host
Outright is thrilled to announce this year's Celebration of Courage Host: the indefatigable BeBe Zahara Benet!
BeBe Zahara Benet is equal parts bold, beautiful, and business-minded. Simply stated: The international recording artist, TV personality, activist and pop culture provocateur breaks the entertainment mold. BeBe is best known as the inaugural winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race, the star of TLC’s Dragnificent and the subject of the award-winning documentary Being BeBe. With BeBe on stage, our evening is guaranteed to be inspirational, joining our communities in support of human rights for LGBTIQ people everywhere.
