On the evening of Thursday, December 24, 2009, twenty-four men in Senegal, including two French nationals, were arrested at a party in Saly Niax Niaxal. Reports of the arrest indicate that police are attempting to “infiltrate” groups of LGBT people, and that this party was raided after an undercover detective was issued an invitation and informed the authorities that it was taking place. Officers arrested those present upon finding makeup, jewelry, and safer-sex materials in the house.
The arrested individuals were initially scheduled for prosecution on Monday, December 28, 2009. That afternoon, the French Embassy in Dakar and local LGBT leadership confirmed that all 24 of the men had been released by December 27 without being charged. IGLHRC remains in touch with Senegalese LGBT and human rights defenders and is continuing to monitor the situation.
