United Nations: Nominations for the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women

IGLHRC strongly supports the nominations of both Professor Charlotte Bunch and Dr. Susana Chiarotti to the position of Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences. Established in 1994, the Special Rapporteur seeks and receives information on violence against women, its causes and consequences from governments, treaty bodies, non-governmental organizations, and others and is expected to respond effectively to such information. This person is also expected to recommend measures, ways, and means, to eliminate violence against women, and its causes, and works closely with other Special Rapporteurs and representatives toward these goals. The Special Rapporteur transmits urgent appeals and communications to States regarding alleged cases of violence against women, undertakes fact-finding country visits, and submits annual thematic reports to the United Nations.

IGLHRC provided a letter of support for both nominees. We call on other individuals and organizations to support both of these nominees. Messages can be sent to hrcspecialprocedures@ohchr.org
