United Nations: Update on CEDAW Election

On July 21, 2008, IGLHRC sent out an action alert (www.iglhrc.org/iowa/article/takeaction/globalactionalerts/9.html) as part of a campaign initiated by IWRAW Asia Pacific asking our human rights colleagues to write to their governments and strongly recommend three feminist experts--Silvia Pimentel from Brazil, Shanthi Dairiam from Malaysia, and Indira Jaising from India--for election to the Committee for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). The CEDAW Convention is the only United Nations human rights treaty designed specifically to combat discrimination against women.
IGLHRC is happy to announce that at yesterday’s session, Silvia Pimentel and Indira Jaising were elected to CEDAW. Unfortunately, Shanthi Dairiam did not get re-elected.

IGLHRC hopes that the new composition of the CEDAW Committee will result in greater support and protection for LBT people.
