Luxembourg is progressive concerning laws and public opinion about LGBTIQ people, but there is still more that can be done to protect their lives. Same-sex couples can marry and adopt, and transgender people can change their legal gender markers on the basis of self-determination. Discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is banned. A strong majority of people from Luxembourg believe that LGBTIQ people should have access to equal rights. In one survey, 75% of individuals agreed that the government effectively fights prejudice against LGBTIQ people, compared to 33% for the European Union. Politicians and government officials, including a prime minister, have been openly LGBTIQ. However, conversion practices and nonconsensual medical interventions on intersex children are still legal, and there are no nonbinary or third-gender legal markers. Family rejection and housing insecurity remain serious issues for LGBTIQ people.
