Celebrating 30 Years of LGBTIQ Visibility and Advocacy at the United Nations 69th Commission on the Status of Women
Thirty years ago, In 1995, lesbians from around the globe gathered outside the United Nations’ 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing, China to assert that lesbian rights are human rights at the now-iconic “lesbian tent.” Today, lesbians – and LGBTIQ people from everywhere – are frequently inside the United Nations, actively shaping policies on gender equality and advocating for the rights of lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and intersex women. This transformation, from the margins to participating at the center of international decision-making equally with others, stands as a powerful testament to the resilience and determination of activists who refused to be silenced.
Join Outright International at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) — the United Nations’ premier annual gathering on gender equality, as we celebrate our own 35 years of impact and ongoing advocacy for LGBTIQ human rights. Our events will highlight the work of activists across the globe, from the historic Lesbian Tent at the 1995 Beijing Conference, the ongoing advocacy within multilateral spaces during the CSW, as well as hearing from LBTI human rights defenders from around the world share their stories and craft strategies for the future. We invite you to take part in our conversations exploring the intergenerational journey of LGBTIQ activism over the past three decades and on into the future, the impact of international processes such as the Generation Equality Forum and the Pact for the Future on LGBTIQ persons, the work being done around the world to combat the violence and discrimination faced by intersex, trans, LBQ and gender diverse persons, as well as the political weaponization of religious narratives against LGBTIQ persons.
This is a crucial time when LGBTIQ people are under direct political attack in all quarters. Now is the time to get informed, unite, and take action!

Thursday, March 13, 3:30 – 5 p.m. ET
Despite their historic contributions to feminist movements, African LBTI women and gender non-conforming (GNC) persons continue to face systemic exclusion, anti-LGBTIQ+ policies, and gender-based discrimination that limit their participation in policy spaces.
As a result, their voices and lived realities are erased from policymaking and implementations processes that shape their lives.
Join CHEVS and Outright International on the margins of CSW69 for a critical conversation on centering African LBTI women and GNC persons in global gender frameworks and ensuring their full participation in decision-making.

Friday, March 14, 8:30 – 10 a.m. ET
The Pact for the Future has set the stage for critical conversations on the revitalization of the CSW, reinforcing the urgent need to safeguard and advance gender equality in multilateral spaces, specifically for LBTIQ women. Join the LBTI Caucus and WRC in exploring how CSW can be more inclusive and effective in advancing gender equality. Civil society’s role is key - join us in strategizing for change at this CSW Revitalization side event!

Monday, March 17, 4:45 – 6 p.m. ET
Join in on the discussion as we explore a feminist and human rights-focused approach to defining and recognizing diverse families through policy. This event will take place in UNHQ Conference Room 9. Registration is not required.
