Turkey: Government Should Respect and Protect the Human Rights of LGBT People

Update: April 30

The local court in Istanbul (Sütlüce Beyoglu) upheld the decision of the higher court and ruled in favor of Lambda Istanbul today, April 30, 2009.

Lambda Istanbul will not be closed down.

IGLHRC has written a letter to the Turkish government supporting a call from Turkish groups for an investigation into a series of murders of gay men and transgender people, and for proactive legislative and policy measures to protect LGBT individuals from violence and discrimination, including discrimination concerning the right to freedom of association and expression. This was recently illustrated by the legal action taken to shutdown the organization Lambda Istanbul.

The case against Lambda Istanbul is to re-open on April 30, 2009 in the local court in Istanbul, whose initial decision on May 29, 2008 to close down the organization was overturned by the appeal court on November 25, 2008.
