Brazil: Murder of Edson Neris Da Silva

On June 26, 2000, Judge Jose Rui Borges sent seven of the 18 accused of the murder of Edson Neris da Silva last January, to trial by a popular jury. The charges were: triply aggravated homicide (the "hate crime" nature of the murder being one of the aggravating causes), murder attempt (on the person of Neris' friend, who managed to flee the scene) and creation of an armed gang. Penalties for those charges range from 22 to 56 years.

Brazilian activists and society in general will keep watching closely how the case proceeds, but up to now local activists describe the performance of all authorities involved as irreproachable and as amply fulfilling the government's national and international commitments against discrimination and for the protection of all Brazilian citizens.
