Ging Cristobal on Pope Francis' Visit to the Philippines Ging Cristobal, Asian project coordinator of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission acknowledges the pope’s “progressive statements on important issues and for trying to correct the misinformation and the overly delayed realizations of the Catholic Church concerning LGBT people.” But she cautions: “I think his ‘progressive’ stand will take a long time for the patriarch church leaders of the Philippines to learn and realize because aside from being the major opposition on the passage of legislative bills concerning human rights issues of LGBT people, they have not been forthright in discussing about LGBT issues nor have the Church made statements condemning the hate, abuse, discrimination and violence LGBT have experienced. I think the Pope should do a refresher course (for Filipino clergy) on what love and respect is really about.”
