Postcard from Jessica Stern

I am truly honored to be named Executive Director of IGLHRC. As I embark on this new journey, I am guided by two simple convictions.

First, the most powerful tool for social change is our own voice, telling our own story. Everyone has a voice, and in my new role, I will lead IGLHRC’s efforts to help empower LGBT voices and provide a platform from which to be heard.

Second, I know that from North to South, from East to West, we LGBT people are not just victims; we are survivors. IGLHRC will depart from the traditional human rights model by not only teaching LGBT communities how to document tragedy but how to build upon our resilience.

I hope that I’ll have the opportunity to partner with you in our shared pursuit of human rights for everyone, everywhere. Send me your ideas to

With warmth and solidarity,

P.S. Check-out last week’s op-eds by Grace Poore, IGLHRC Asia Program Coordinator, about LGBT rights in Singapore and the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration.

P.P.S. This week, I’m in Geneva at the UN with Andres Rivera Duarte, IGLHRC Senior Advisor for Latin America & the Caribbean and Director of Organización de Transexuales por la Dignidad de la Diversidad (Organization of Transsexuals for the Dignity of Diversity), presenting our exposé of LGBT rights violations in Chile to the CEDAW Committee. More about outcomes next time!
