Ghana Poised to Vote on ‘Worst Anti-LGBTQ Bill Ever,’ Advocates Warn
In an article highlighting a dangerous new bill presented to the Ghanaian parliament in June of 2021, Outright’s Africa program officer, Yvonne Wamari, is quoted. The wide-ranging bill would make virtually any instance of LGBTIQ existence illegal in the country. The “crime” with the most jail time would be advocating for LGBTIQ rights. Wamari is quoted for her legal expertise. She comments that while there is a good chance that the bill goes to vote, with the proper pressure placed on the legal sector, it could also be thrown out. In her opinion, what it comes down to is how much civil society can shift the conversation surrounding the LGBTIQ community in the coming weeks.
