Human Rights for LGBTIQ People Everywhere

Human rights for LGBTIQ people everywhere

The Objectives

  • Human rights belong to everyone by virtue of being human. However, around the world, the human rights of LGBTIQ people are not recognized, are actively denied and violated in shocking ways on a daily basis. This is a gross injustice for a significant proportion of people in societies around the world. Because of this, OutRight fights for human rights for LGBTIQ people everywhere.

  • Why we are launching this campaign and getting as many people as possible to amplify these messages.

  • LGBTIQ people have the right to be who we are and love whom we choose regardless of where we live. OutRight fights for the recognition and protection of the human rights of LGBTIQ people everywhere.

  • OutRight Action International uses the acronym LGBTIQ to denote the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer community. This acronym is inclusive of a broad range of people, however, it is not exhaustive, nor is it universally accepted or used.

  • SOGIESC refers to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics. Everyone has a sexual orientation, a gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics. Regardless of a person's SOGIESC, they are protected by universal human rights.

  • Too often rights are denied because a person's SOGIESC does not meet arbitrary societal or cultural norms and expectations, thus violating the most fundamental element of human rights - universality.

  • In 2015 the international community agreed to a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) intended to achieve a better, more sustainable world for all by 2030. While LGBTIQ people are not explicitly mentioned in the SDG's, their overarching theme and commitment is to “leave no one behind”. Without inclusion of LGBTIQ people everywhere in the fulfillment of every single SDG, they can not be achieved.

  • Join OutRight in fighting for a baseline for LGBTIQ communities - human rights for LGBTIQ people everywhere.

The Challenges

Around the world, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) and allied advocates continue to face enormous challenges and risks to their own personal safety to call out abuses of the human rights of LGBTIQ people, and force changes to laws that discriminate against them.

OutRight works at the international, regional and national levels to research, document, defend, and advance human rights for LGBTIQ people globally.

We partner directly with human rights defenders, allies and organizations to produce reliable data on the experiences of LGBTIQ people around the world and support research-based advocacy and capacity-building for LGBTIQ rights. OutRight is:

  • The only US-based LGBTIQ organization holding consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)
  • The Secretariat of the LGBTI Core Group, a coalition of United Nations member states dedicated to advancing equality and ensuring human rights of LGBTIQ people
  • One of two founding non-governmental organizations advising companies in the Partnership for Global LGBTI Equality, a World Economic Forum Lighthouse Project, and a coalition of businesses committed to leveraging their individual and collective advocacy to accelerate LGBTI equality and inclusion globally
