Every year the Commission of the Status of Women (CSW) convenes at the United Nations Headquarters in the New York City. CSW brings together representatives from UN Member States, civil society organizations (you) and UN entities to collaborate around written Agreed Conclusions. The annual meeting is two weeks long. This year it runs from March 11th to March 22nd.

Activism Crackdown in China

Since 2016, the Chinese government has been warning against ‘western style activism’ and cautioned against ‘western political agenda’. On Jan 9, 2019, the Guangzhou government released a statement on 'illegal organizations' that are banned in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province in Southern China. This is the 6th round of names released to the public. For the first time in China, two organizations working on LGBT issues were listed.

In 2018, we worked to hold the line as the assault on human rights globally continued and we stood strong seeing some steps forwards in advancing human rights for LGBTIQ people everywhere. But, the increase in discrimination, racism, sexism, Islamophobia and xenophobia made LGBTIQ people globally even more unsafe. Members of our community suffered acutely from Russia to Azerbaijan, Tanzania, Indonesia and beyond in arrests, arbitrary detentions, criminal prosecutions and torture.

In Port of Spain, Trinidad, The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) ruled that the law in Guyana, which makes it a criminal offense for a man or a woman to appear in a public place while dressed in clothing of the opposite sex for an “improper purpose” is unconstitutional.

President Sirisena ousted the country's elected Prime Minister (Mr. Wickremesinghe) and replaced him with Mr. Rajapaksa who was the previous President and has a long horrible track record of human rights violations. What's happened is illegal and unconstitutional. It has significant implications for all human rights, including of LGBT communities in Sri Lanka.
