Jessica Stern, executive director of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, issued the following comments in response to the Vatican report on family life:
“Within a brief span of hopeful days, lesbian, gay and bisexual people envisioned the possibility of a new welcoming era for the Catholic Church. Sadly, this is not to be—at least not for now. It would be tragic if the church allowed the forces of intolerance to gain the upper hand at this time. The fact that the bishops at its synod could not even agree on a watered-down version of its statement on homosexuality shows divisions that are at cross purposes to meaningful progress. I continue to hold out the hope that the bishops will reassess its frozen-in-time perspective and extend a welcoming hand to all people who believe."
