A NSHR press release dated 31 July alleges that Dr Nujoma referred to NSHR Director, Phil ya Nangolo, as a "homosexual".
TRP, as the only Namibian organisation that lobbies for the rights of all sexual minorities, strongly condemns this verbal homophobic attack, which violates Article 8, that speaks about respect and human dignity; and Article 21 that advocates the fundamental freedoms of all.
We appeal to fellow human rights activists and all Namibians to continue fighting and speaking out for the marginalised groups of this country and indeed the world. When as a human rights defender you are labelled as one of those whose rights you are defending; it is a clear affirmation of your dedication to the equality and dignity of all people.
We, question Dr. Nujoma’s motive for such a personal attack and suspect that we are once again used as a scapegoat to avert attention from the current controversies within the SWAPO Party.
The gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people of this country will no longer be silenced by the SWAPO Party President’s irresponsible, ignorant and derogatory remarks.
trp categorically state that the refusal to respect and tolerate our existence, humanity, equality and dignity is a form of aggression and violence and we will not tolerate it any longer.
Since the inauguaration of President Hifikepunye Pohamba, there is a marked decrease in hate speech and verbal attacks by political leaders.
We therefore call upon President Pohamba to maintain his government’s pro-human rights stance and make it clear to Dr. Nujoma that we have a constitution to uphold and that regardless of his position; such attacks will not be tolerated.
In conclusion, thank you to all trp’s supporters and our fellow human rights activists. Our annual LGBT week will be taking place in September and all are invited to a week of information, debate and enlightenment. Watch the press for details.
