OutStanding Legacy Circle

OutStanding Legacy Circle

OutRight’s OutStanding Legacy Circle is a special group of donors who believe in the global movement for LGBTIQ human rights and equality and want to invest in OutRight’s future work through a planned gift from their estate. You can join our OutStanding Legacy Circle by making OutRight a beneficiary of your will, retirement plan, life insurance, trusts or other estate planning mechanisms.

Since OutRight was founded in 1990, we have seen tremendous progress in advancing human rights and equality for LGBTIQ people around the world over the past 30 years. Many colonial-era laws criminalizing same-sex intimacy have fallen, and a growing number of countries are recognizing same-sex partnerships and transgender rights. Abusive “conversion therapy” practices to change or suppress same-sex attraction and gender identity are coming under fire from the EU, the UN, and the number of countries banning these harmful practices is slowly rising. These gains have happened because of the dedicated activists and leaders who have pushed for change – and because of supporters like you who have invested in OutRight and our global movement.

But we still have a long way to go to achieve our vision of full human rights and equality for LGBTIQ people everywhere. There isn't a single country in the world in which LGBTIQ people can live safe from harassment, stigma or violence. 68 countries still criminalize homosexuality, and “conversion therapy” continues even in places where it is banned. The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected LGBTIQ people. And a conservative backlash targeting LGBTIQ people and general trend toward authoritarianism that disregards human rights is on the rise around the world.

Looking ahead, we must be determined and relentless in fighting for a world where all LGBTIQ people can live in safety, with freedom, dignity and equality and to ensure that the progress we’ve made does not backslide. OutRight has been at the forefront of our global movement for 30 years, and we will be here for the next 30 years and beyond. But we can only do it with your help. Please join us by including OutRight in your estate plans today. By doing so, you’ll be joining a special group of individuals and families who share your values and passion and you will receive special benefits from OutRight, including recognition in our communications (unless you choose to remain anonymous), invitations to special briefings with our Board and staff leadership, and more. In addition, you may also receive significant tax benefits for you and your family.

For more information, watch this special panel of donors and LGBTIQ giving experts discussing trends in philanthropy and how you can achieve your vision for LGBTIQ equality around the world through planned/estate giving.

OutStanding Legacy Circle supporters are a diverse group of individuals and families all over the world who share a passion for and commitment to human rights and equality for LGBTIQ people everywhere. Here are just a few of them:

Paul Albert

"I am very grateful for a way to help OutRight build on its priceless work in the decades ahead. It has been extremely fulfilling to be a part of the OutRight community and supporting its mission for so long. After thirty years and many accomplishments we are also just getting started!"

Dipti Ghosh and Meggy Gotuaco

"My partner Meggy and I are adult immigrants to the US, and are fortunate to enjoy a level of civil liberties not afforded to many LGBTQ people around the world, including in our home countries. There is no other organization that works with activists in countries where queer people’s human rights are threatened or nonexistent. It is going to be a long and hard fight and I want to do our small part to make sure OutRight can continue to do their outstanding work. This is why we support OutRight and have included them in our estate plan."

John Heilman | Board Member

"Our fight for global  LGBTQI equality will not be won overnight, nor will it be complete in my lifetime. That's why I'm part of OutRight's Legacy Circle. I want to make sure OutRight always has the resources to make the world a safe place for LGBTQI people to live, work and love."

Royce Lin and Roger Doughty

"The rights and dignity of LGBTI people must be secured and protected for generations to come–everywhere. We know that OutRight will be leading that fight, advocating for LGBTI rights and freedoms, and creating a more just world for LGBTI people across the globe long after we’re gone. This gives us great joy to know that OutRight and its work is a part of our legacies."

Peter McAweeney & Tod Hill

"We have always given our time and money to support the causes we believe in as an essential and joyful part of our lives. We plan to contribute a significant portion of our estate to OutRight for the same reasons we support it today. OutRight is helping to build a connected, global movement for LGBTIQ equality that leaves no one behind. Our global community needs the support of those of us who live relatively comfortable lives here in the United States, but we here in the US also need a strong global movement. We made our plan as if we might not be around tomorrow, but with a vision to the future. Our legacy gift to OutRight fills us with pride and joy today, and we know that the gift will bear fruit in the future."

James Phelps and Tim Baldwin

"The future of LGBTIQ rights is on the international front. As much as we want that work to be completed in our lifetimes we recognize some challenges will continue for generations. We want OutRight to continue their work until every LGBTIQ individual in the world can live their authentic life where they choose to live. By including OutRight in our estate plan, we can support OutRight for years to come.

Dorothy Sander

"OutRight's work is so necessary in this world, expanding public policy and fighting for equal rights for LGBTQI people around the globe, country-by-country. It takes special people to keep ideas and conversations moving.  And money; and that's why I'm a donor. The work OutRight does with local organizations in many regions of the world brings real change.  Leaving a legacy gift assures that the work that inspired me to give during my lifetime can  continue into the future."

Tom Watson

"In my 60 years, I’ve personally experienced the real life impact of the successful LGBTI movement.  Like all human rights movements, there are never ending cycles of profound progress and disturbing setbacks. But the global momentum toward equality has been achieved in part because of OutRight‘s decades-long activism at the forefront of the international LGBTI movement...and not just in the world’s wealthy democracies.  Progress is hard-earned but it‘s also precarious. After my lifetime, our fundamental rights will still need to be protected which is why I included OutRight in my estate planning. I know they will still be around fighting for us in the long run."

Jeanne Córdova

"It is wonderful to have had a life’s cause: freedom and dignity for lesbians. We built a movement by telling each other our lives and thoughts about the way life should be. We cut against the grain and re-thought almost everything. With just enough left undone for our daughters to re-invent themselves. Death should be a part of life. Not hidden, not a secret, something we never said out loud. This directory (Gay and Lesbian Community Yellow Pages) and lucky timing in life-long real estate enabled me to fulfill an early personal vow to give back half of my estate to our movement. I believe it is so critical to our transforming movements to leave our estates to our LBGTQ charities. Being an organizer and journalist in the lesbian, gay, feminist, and women of color communities—and loving it–has been the focal point, of my life. It has been a wild joyous ride."

We are extremely grateful for the fierce dedication, leadership and generosity of Jeanne Córdova, a beloved activist, author and publisher who included OutRight in her estate plan before her death in 2016. Jeanne was a pioneer and role model in the butch, lesbian and Chicana communities who was devoted to fighting for our community - especially those with less visibility and power. You can read more about Jeanne’s extraordinary life and impact here and her own “Letter About Dying to My Lesbian Communities” here. Our deepest thanks to Jeanne and her spouse Lynn Harris Ballen for their moving and meaningful solidarity and support of OutRight and so many critical LGBTIQ organizations.

Ric Weiland

We will forever be grateful to Ric Weiland, whose generous bequest to OutRight and other LGBTIQ organizations after his passing in 2006 was a truly transformational investment to the growth of our work and in our community. Read more about Ric and his legacy gift here.

OutRight offers an array of planned giving opportunities to match the unique situation and priorities of each of our donors. You can make a deferred gift from your estate that will not cost anything now by making OutRight a beneficiary of your will, trust, retirement plan or life insurance policy. You can make a planned gift through Charitable Trusts or other vehicles that will support OutRight and create an income stream for you and your family. In addition, there are many other types of planned/estate gifts that may provide tax benefits to you and your loved ones while supporting OutRight. We will work with you and your financial and legal advisors to ensure that your charitable intentions are realized in the giving vehicles that work best for you. Here are some options and resources to consider:

Wills & Trusts:
A charitable bequest to OutRight in your will can take many forms: You can leave a specific sum of money or property/assets, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder of your estate after other payments and bequests have been fulfilled. You can also leave a contingent bequest to leave OutRight a portion or all of your estate only if your partner or other beneficiary passes away before you; or create a charitable trust through your will that will benefit loved ones during their lifetimes and then pass to OutRight.

Charitable bequests are one of the easiest and most flexible ways to make a lasting impact, and they are deductible for estate tax purposes, relieving your loved ones of added estate tax burden. To include OutRight in your will please use this sample language (please contact us for alternate language for residuary or contingent bequests):

“I hereby give and bequeath [cash amount, percentage amount of my estate, or property I designate] to OutRight Action International, a nonprofit corporation located in New York, NY (or its successor organization) for its general purposes.”

We also suggest including our full name, federal tax ID and address in your will:

OutRight Action International
216 East 45th Street, 17th Floor New York, NY 10017
Tax ID number: 94-3139952

Retirement Plans and Life Insurance:
You can name OutRight as the beneficiary of your retirement plan or life insurance policy or other unused assets such as CDs, bank or brokerage accounts, savings bonds, Donor Advised Funds (DAFs), etc. These gifts are often larger than donors can give during their lifetime and have a huge impact on our work. They can also reduce or eliminate estate and income taxes for your loved ones. You can name OutRight as the beneficiary of your plan/policy/account so that when you pass away, the assets pass to OutRight, or as a contingent beneficiary with the assets passing to OutRight only if your primary beneficiary does not survive you. To make OutRight a beneficiary of your retirement account, life insurance policy, or other accounts, contact your financial institution, request a change of beneficiary form, and complete with the following information.

OutRight Action International
216 East 45th Street, 17th Floor New York, NY 10017
Tax ID number: 94-3139952

Charitable Trusts:
Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRTs) are created by transferring assets to a trust, which then provides income to you and your loved ones over a period of time, after which the principal passes to OutRight. Charitable Lead Trusts (CLTs) are created by transferring assets to a trust, which then pays OutRight an annual income for a fixed number of years, after which the principal reverts to you or your loved ones. CRTs and CLTs have the potential to offer immediate, partial income tax deductions and benefits to donors.

Gifts of Real Estate:
You can donate appreciated property to OutRight while you continue to use the property during your lifetime (“life estate”).

Gifts of Securities:
You can donate stocks, bonds or mutual funds to OutRight, receive a charitable tax deduction, and avoid paying capital gains tax on any increase in the stock value. Please click here for more information about how to transfer a gift of securities to OutRight.
