“As we mark Transgender Day of Remembrance we must heed the lessons of history, which demand that we confront bigotry under all circumstances, everywhere. We must join together and say: No more targeted discrimination; no more violence and no more hate against people who are transgender and gender non-conforming.
We must stand together and speak out against hate, intolerance, violence and killings.
The twin evils of prejudice and hate are not unique to particular countries or regions, but a widespread affliction. To fight both, and the violence they ignite, all of us-- lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and our allies-- must speak out. Otherwise, we will forever find a fundamental obstacle in our struggle for legal and social equality across the world.
I am convinced we can inspire a groundswell of pressure to reverse attacks on individuals’ understanding of gender. Today, I join all allies in remembering our trans brothers and sisters and standing up for universal human rights for everyone, everywhere.
Join me in saying: No more.
