Postcard: Why Ugandan LGBTI Stories Matter

Dear Friends,

I’m thrilled to let you know about a special campaign we at IGLHRC launched this week to support an exciting initiative by activists in Uganda. You may be aware of the publication last year of Bombastic Magazine, which was filled with news, short stories, and articles about the experiences of the Ugandan LGBTI community—the kind of information that was largely ignored by the mainstream media. The first edition was created in 2014 by Kasha Jacqueline, a founder of the Ugandan LGBTI movement who most recently gained worldwide attention when she was featured on Time magazine’s cover and was honored in June as one of the Grand Marshals for New York City’s Pride Parade.

Watch video about Ugandan activism and Bombastic Magazine:

Kasha and a team of volunteers delivered 20,000 copies of Bombastic across the country (often left on doorsteps, windshields, and mailboxes), triggering an unexpected outpouring of support and national visibility. The Ugandan press reported on the magazine, high-ranking politicians picked it up, and most important, isolated LGBTI Ugandans read it -- becoming connected to the growing support networks in their communities.

Kasha’s team received hundreds of requests for a second edition, which led her to reach out to IGLHRC to help launch the international crowdfunding campaign that we will run through October to raise funds for a second edition of the magazine.

In 48 hours, the campaign generated more than a dozen donations and about $500 toward the $5,000 goal.

We know that storytelling plays a profound role in transforming social attitudes, and all of us at IGLHRC are grateful and honored to support Kasha’s dedication and vision. We hope you will agree.

Thank you,

Jessica Stern
