LBQ Pre-Conference at ILGA Asia in Cambodia

With the support of ASEAN SOGIE Caucus, Sayoni, UN Women Asia Pacific and OutRight Action International, this LBQ Pre-conference at ILGA Asia Cambodia from 4-5 December is the first initiative to bring LBQ activists together in the much-needed construction of a LBQ movement in the Asia Pacific. The 2 days pre-conference will offer a space for the empowerment of LBQ women, to build solidarity and to articulate our needs, struggles and to envision possibilities as a collective.

As Executive Director of Divesidad Dominica, Rosanna Marzan helps usher a new wave of LGBTIQ awareness into the Dominican Republic. While pursuing an education in law, Marzan has proudly represented the LGBTIQ community of the D.R. in a long list of local and international policy meetings. Marzan, who considers herself a “social educator,” works with fellow activists to make state heads and legislators aware of the need for SOGIESC inclusion.

Newly Appointed Independent Expert on the Protection Against Violence and Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

Earlier this week, the President of the Human Rights Council (HRC) formally recommended Victor Madrigal-Borloz for the appointment of the new Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity (IE SOGI). Barring any unforeseen complications, Madrigal-Borloz will be confirmed by the Council on December 4th 2017.

Religious Freedom at the United Nations

Some UN member countries claim a right to discriminate towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people based on religious objections. This type of discrimination includes everything from so called ‘conversion’ therapy, refusal to teach anti-bullying programs in schools, to the death penalty and corporal punishment for perceived or actual differences in sexual orientation or gender identity.

On 27th October 2017, Professor Vitit Muntarbhorn, the United Nations (UN) Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, presented his first report to the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly. Despite rumoured threats of a mass walk out, a significant number of African States and members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) were notably in the room.

Right now at the United Nations Russia and Egypt are secretly trying to remove all reference to Principle 6 of the Olympic Charter from the Global Olympic Truce that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation at the Olympic Games.
Before every Olympic Games an international peace agreement is negotiated at the United Nations. The truce protects peace, safety and security for Athletes and their supporters. Sign this petition to United Nations countries to support the inclusion of Principle 6.

Brett Parson, OutRight remains optimistic that Filipino law enforcement will grow to reflect the needs of LGBTIQ citizens.
